Although this type of boat originated in the United States, it is developing rapidly all over the world, from Europe to Asia. As a result, the number of pontoon boat manufacturers is difficult to calculate, as the range is extremely diverse. There are, of course, a few major groups such as Brunswick and White River Marine, but also countless smaller, sometimes highly specialized, manufacturers. In the United States alone, there are almost a hundred brands. Added to this are European, Asian and South African manufacturers, bringing the total to several hundred worldwide.

What's more, the definition of "pontoon boat" is sometimes rather evasive. In addition to traditional models with aluminum floats, some manufacturers offer fiberglass floats designed like boat hulls or, on the other hand, simple improved barges sometimes called pontoon boats.
